Korean Handset Component Makers Turn to Europe
June 30, 2005
The Japanese and Chinese markets were originally the main focus of Korean handset component makers, but competition in those markets has grown increasingly fierce. Recently, European mobile phone companies have introduced UMPS 3G services, similar to the WCDMA system used in Korea. As this development has stimulated the demand for high-added value components such as camera modules, more and more Korean handset component makers are starting to expand their business to Europe.

CT has signed contracts with European mobile phone companies for 200,000 camera modules. Sunyang DNT has signed a contract with Vittel Mobile, a daughter company of Spain's largest communications company Telefonica, to supply camera modules, including 1.3 million-pixel and 2.0 million-pixel modules. Lastly, Interflex has signed a contract with Nokia to supply FPCs (Flexible Printed Circuits) to Nokia, replacing Japanese NOK and Taiwanese makers as Nokia's supplier for these components.
